Assessor's Office

The duties of the Assessor include placing an equitable value on each
parcel in the Town and maintaining an inventory of all data related to
the ownership and assessment of the parcels.
The Assessor's office
also processes all exemption forms.

FROM THE ASSESSOR’S OFFICE
The renewal applications for the Enhanced STAR exemption (reduction
on your school taxes) have been mailed to property owners.  Please fill
this out and return to our office as soon as possible, but no later than
March 1st of the current year. 
Applications received after this date will not be approved.

WE WILL NEED PROOF OF YOUR PRIOR YEAR’S INCOME THAT MUST
BE ATTACHED TO THIS APPLICATION.  You should use your prior year
Federal or State Income Tax form for proof of income.  Be sure that the amount
of social security RECEIVED by you and your spouse is shown on the form. 
We will not grant this application without proof of income.

YOU MUST APPLY EVERY YEAR IF YOU WISH TO CONTINUE TO
RECEIVE THE STAR EXEMPTION.  Therefore, this office will be mailing a
renewal application to you every year.  If you do not qualify you will receive
a notice stating the reason why you do not qualify

CURRENT BASIC STAR PARTICIPANTS
If you will be 65 years old or older anytime during calendar 2011 and have
a 2011 income less than $79,050 per year as evidenced by your 2011
Federal Income Tax, you may be eligible to receive the Enhanced STAR
Exemption.  If married, only one owner must be 65 years of age, but the
income of ALL owners, including non-resident owners must be included.

Important Dates to Note:
Taxable Status Date: March 1
Exemption Filing Deadline: February 28
Tentative Roll Filed: May 1
Final Roll Filed: July 1

Grievance Day is the fourth Tuesday in May.
The Grievance Review Board will meet between the hours of
5 and 9 pm at the Town Offices to hear and examine all
written complaints relative to assessments put forth in the
Tentative Assessment Roll filed by the Town Assessor on or
about May 1st. Grievants must file a written complaint form
(RP-524) and schedule an appointment with the Board prior to
grievance day. Complaint forms are available at the Assessor's
Office and appointments can be scheduled by calling 677-3420
during business hours listed above.

Complainants are encouraged to bring documentation for the Board
to review that supports your estimation of value such as a recent,
detailed appraisal of your property, any recent sales data on homes
in the area, or pictures of comparable properties in the Town of LaFayette.
